Wildlife photography born from reconnaissance.
For 17 years I was a Royal Air Force officer, much of it in Tactical Reconnaissance — trained to read light, terrain and timing long before anyone handed me a camera for fun.
Most of my published recognition, though, has come from the sea rather than the savannah. I'm an RYA Yachtmaster with three Atlantic crossings under my keel, and my sailing photography has won Photo of the Year from the Cruising Association, the World Cruising Club and the International Cruisers Awards. I have twice been selected in the Historic Ships Annual Photography Competition, and my writing and images appear regularly in Yachting World, Yachting Monthly, Cruising and Latitudes & Attitudes. Away from the water, I have also won the Explorer Travel Group's Photo of the Year.
What has always pulled me out of bed before dawn, however, is wildlife: the elephants of Chobe, the penguins of the Antarctic Peninsula, the leopards of Rajasthan. Increasingly that means conservation work too, including an ongoing collaboration with the Centre for Wildlife Studies in India.
