Most sailing photographs promise the same thing: a heeled hull, spray off the bow, a perfect sky. This book is interested in everything that idea leaves out.
Reading the Sea follows Arkyla, a 45-foot Swedish-built bluewater cruiser, and the years of learning that led to her captain crossing an ocean in her — through the Mediterranean, the Canaries, and Cape Verde to the Caribbean, and home again by way of the Azores. Along the way: an electrical storm off Salcombe with the camera left below, because some moments are worth surviving rather than shooting; a mid-Atlantic whale strike and eight hundred improvised miles to landfall; a becalmed afternoon four kilometres above the seafloor and six hundred miles from anywhere; and the long, unphotogenic stretches in between that make up most of what a passage actually is.
Told through story rather than settings, and organised by theme rather than itinerary, this is a book about learning to see — and about the discipline of choosing, afterward, which photographs actually deserve to survive the edit.
